An Italian doctor has been getting dramatic results with a new type of treatment for Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, which affects up to 2.5 million people worldwide. He named the problem Chronic Cerebro-Spinal Venous Insufficiency, or CCSVI.

Zamboni immediately scheduled his wife for a simple operation to unblock the veins – a catheter was threaded up through blood vessels in the groin area, all the way up to the effected area, and then a small balloon was inflated to clear out the blockage. It’s a standard and relatively risk-free operation – and the results were immediate. In the three years since the surgery, Dr. Zamboni’s wife has not had an attack.

Widening out his study, Dr. Zamboni then tried the same operation on a group of 65 MS-sufferers, identifying blood drainage blockages in the brain and unblocking them – and more than 73% of the patients are completely free of the symptoms of MS, two years after the operation.

In some cases, a balloon is not enough to fully open the vein channel, which collapses either as soon as the balloon is removed, or sometime later. In these cases, a metal stent can easily be used, which remains in place holding the vein open permanently.

Dr. Zamboni’s lucky find is yet to be accepted by the medical community, which is traditionally slow to accept revolutionary ideas. Still, most agree that while further study needs to be undertaken before this is looked upon as a cure for MS, the results thus far have been very positive.

The Deadly Murray Valley encephalitis

A mosquito-borne virus which killed a Canadian tourist and left a toddler critically ill has prompted a widespread warning for people to cover up and protect themselves from mosquito bites in Australia’s north.

A 19-year-old Canadian woman died after contracting Murray Valley encephalitis following a trip through the Northern Territory this month. She returned home where she became unwell, and yesterday died in a hospital in Calgary, Alberta.

A Northern Territory Health Department spokesman said it was not known where in the NT the Canadian woman had contracted the disease.

In the meantime, a two-year-old remains in Royal Darwin Hospital Australia after also contracting the potentially fatal mosquito-borne virus in the Kimberley region of WA.

A WA police officer who contracted MVE while on a two-week relief stint at an Aboriginal community remains in a Perth hospital.

Constable Ryan Marron, 29, has come out of a coma but is still unable to communicate.

It is not known if the police officer or the toddler will fully recover.

Last month, a man who had been travelling in WA’s northwest became the first person in the state to die from the disease in three years.

So far this year there have been three confirmed cases of MVE in the Northern Territory and one report of the closely related Kunjin virus.

In WA there have been nine reports of MVE, leaving one dead and several hospitalised.

The WA Health Department last week issued its fifth warning in three months, following the death of a man in WA last month.

The viruses, which have no cure and no vaccination, kill 25 per cent of people who contract them while another 25 per cent have residual neurological effects.

People infected in WA so far this year had been travelling through the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and eastern Goldfields regions.

Department entomologist Sue Harrington said while there was no suggestion the MVE virus would reach Perth, the fact it had already hit the Wheatbelt and Mid-West regions was of a concern.

“It seems to have activated independently this season,” she said.

“There has been an extension of that area, so a large proportion of West Australia is now affected by MVE.”

The death of a man in the north-west of the state last month and a South Australian man two weeks ago led the Department to issue another stern warning about the virus.

“It causes inflammation of the brain,” she said.

“People have suffered paralysis and brain damage of varying degrees.

“Often people in the north just accept that mosquitoes are a fact of life.

“A lot of people might have been bitten and have developed the antibodies.

“Every year we have activity in the region. It’s still the same disease, with the same drastic symptoms.”

Ms Harrington warned as there was no cure doctors were only able to treat the symptoms of the virus so people living and travelling outside the metropolitan area should take measures to avoid mosquito bites by applying mosquito repellents and wearing long-sleeved clothing.

In addition to MVE and Kunjin viruses, Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses were still causing dramas across the south of the state with more infections reported to the Department.

The latter two viruses cause similar symptoms including painful joints, aching muscles, lethargy, fever, headaches and skin rashes and can last from days to months.

The symptoms of Kunjin and MVE are similar. While the latter is more severe, both cause fever, drowsiness, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness. Young children can experience drowsiness, floppiness, irritability, poor feeding or general distress.

DIABETES IS A CURABLE DISEASE IT IS SAID – TRUE OR FALSE?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a review regarding the long term adverse effects of Diabetes drug Actos to the body. According to the study, data acquired from patients taking Actos has shown more risk of getting bladder cancer. The extended consumption of the drug has shown significance in affecting a person’s susceptibility to bladder cancer.

The presence of unwanted side effects has been one of the primary issues surrounding the use of diabetes pharmaceutical drugs. Another diabetes drug, Avandia, has also been subjected to several debates by health professionals and FDA experts regarding its overwhelming side effects, including the increase of heart failure risk. But the lack of other quality options proven curative or beneficial to controlling diabetes keeps these drugs, including Actos, in the market.

FDA has yet to conduct further studies regarding Actos and its potential influence over bladder cancer risk.  The results may spell the difference between getting the red light, or the green light, with regards to consumption. However, early human and animal studies had linked Actos to the condition.  In fact, the agency had required Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Actos, to conduct their own study regarding the potential risks brought about by the prolonged use of the drug, especially its influence over bladder cancer. The study is expected to last for 10 years.  Results on its 5th year reveals that intake of the drug did not show increased risk of getting bladder cancer. But when the researchers focused on the patients who had taken the highest dosage of the drug in their lifetime, a significant increase in bladder cancer risk was apparent. The increase in risk was observed in patients who had taken the drug for at least 24 months.

In their published statement, the FDA refused to assure the public that Actos increases the risk of bladder cancer. They advised patients who are taking Actos as a maintenance drug to stop taking the drug and seek consultation from their physicians or a medical professional for alternative ways to control their diabetes, especially if they are finding Actos an unsuitable option, and if they have been experiencing the probable onset of the proposed side effect.

A Closer Look at Diabetes

June 1, 2008 — Infectious disease experts designed a machine called the hemopurifier. It works much like a dialysis machine, using thin fibers to capture and remove viruses from the blood it filters.
